Unum expands health app to life insurance and critical illness customers

Unum has extended access to its health and wellbeing app, Help@hand, to all its group life and critical illness customers at no cost.

Help@hand was already available to all Unum group income protection customers, and in 2021, the employee benefits provider expanded the service to life and critical illness customers with 250 or fewer employees in order to assist smaller businesses that may have been impacted by lockdowns. With this latest addition, 1.4 million employees who are already covered by an Unum group risk policy can now access Help@hand.

Help@hand gives employees instant access to five support services and includes unlimited remote GP appointments available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, as well as mental health support and physiotherapy. Help@hand’s five key health and wellbeing services will soon be supplemented by a new ‘sixth’ service, which will be integrated into the app next month. Users will be able to access Unum’s wellbeing calendar and its year-round support, which includes podcasts, webinars, and awareness dates aimed at improving overall health and wellbeing.

In addition to the Help@hand app service offering expansion, eligible employers now have access to the Help@hand Insights Report, which provides anonymized insight into the usage patterns of their employee benefits services by enabling them to identify key workforce trends such as utilisation by a health issue, number of sessions used, gender, age, time of appointment, and more.

Unum UK chief distribution officer Glenn Thompson says: “We’re delighted to extend Help@hand to every employer with a Unum Group Risk policy, increasing the value employees receive over and above the vital protection our products offer.

“The service was recognised with two industry awards in 2021 for its fast, effective provision of health and wellbeing support, so we feel this extension, at a time where research indicates that 2 in 5 employees are attracted to new employers based on the quality of their benefits package, will give every employer with a Unum protection policy an edge during today’s current recruitment and retention squeeze.”
