Bulk annuities and longevity swaps totalled £18bn in the first half of 2022, according to Aon.
Aon’s UK Risk Settlement Market Update shows that H1 2022 bulk annuities amounted to £12bn.
Analysts, therefore, predict that bulk annuities will surpass the £25bn mark for the fourth year in a row in 2022.
According to Aon, the first half of 2022 still represents a major improvement over the first half of 2021, when 60 transactions were written covering £7.7bn in liabilities.
Around 75 per cent of all deals written in the first half of 2022 were full-scheme deals, and the majority of new auctions entering the market are for full scheme transactions.
Recent gains in returns have decreased scheme liabilities in pounds and, consequently, the size of annuity deals, which limits total volumes for 2022.
Aon says that transaction volumes may be impacted by the recent market volatility; in particular, some pensioner buy-ins may be temporarily postponed in light of the momentarily uncertain amount of available assets for de-risking and as a result of changes in market yield, it might also lower their values.
