Call to improve benefit communications as mental health conditions soar

The cumulative events of recent years — including the pandemic, Brexit-uncertainty, the war in Ukraine and the cost-of-living crisis — have increased the need for better mental health support in the workplace.

Nursing support service RedArc says these events, on top of everyday challenges, have put increased pressure on many people’s mental wellbeing. It says this has come as the NHS struggles to deal with the record number of mental health referrals, with 1.4m people now waiting for treatment. 

Support is often available via employers and insurers, and RedArc says it is important these services are properly highlighted to ensure individuals are aware of the help that is available. 

RedArc managing director Christine Husbands says: “Mental health is complex, and it’s important that specialists provide support. There are many different types of therapy and support available, and it must be personalised to ensure people get the most appropriate support for them.”

She adds that support for individual, and their partners and children is often embedded  within insurances and employee benefits, and it’s important that the industry and employers clearly communicate what is available to ensure it is utilised.
