…introducing the next generation of rising stars in the DC pensions and consultancy industry. This month we hear from Katie Walker, senior consultant at LCP, associate of the PMI and co-chair of LCP’s LGBTQ+ committee

What’s your current role – and what does this involve?

My job is really varied, which is why I enjoy it. I spend most of my time working with our pension risk transfer team, helping clients pick the best insurer to secure their pensions with. I’m a member experience specialist, so I focus on exactly what pension scheme members will see at every stage of the process and help clients navigate all of the differences between insurers.

I spend the rest of my time on post -transaction projects (helping pension schemes tie up all of the loose ends after a buy-in transaction so that they can buy-out and wind-up), helping clients to appoint professional trustees to their boards, and working on diversity, equity and inclusion – both internally at LCP and externally with clients.

What’s the best thing about your job — and the worst?

I spend more of my day talking to people – which is probably simultaneously the best and worst part! I love meeting new people and getting to know them, but that can sometimes get in the way when you need to get your head down and write a report or get stuck into a spreadsheet. There’s a perception that working in pensions means spending all day on Excel, but that’s not the case for me. I spend most of my time interacting with a wide range of people — from trustees and CFOs to insurers, lawyers, and sometimes even the members themselves. I especially enjoy talking to members, as it reminds me why we’re doing this work.

What made you apply for a job in the pension industry?

I definitely fell into pensions (as most do, I think). I liked the idea of combining consulting with something technical, so I applied for actuarial graduate schemes. I liked the people I met, which was enough to convince me to accept the job. Despite initially saying I’d “probably do it for a year,” almost eight years later, I still love it, and I think I’m in pensions for life now.

What role do you see yourself working in 10 years from now?

My role has changed so much since I started as a graduate in 2017. I can imagine that in 10 years, I’ll be doing something I haven’t even dreamed of yet.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

Say yes to anything but not everything. Make sure you’re willing to try new things, gain new experiences, and work with new people. But don’t overload yourself so that you can’t deliver high-quality work.

What should the pensions industry be doing to attract more young people into it, and to engage younger savers?

I don’t think the pensions industry is doing too badly at attracting young people — LCP always has an incredible number of amazing candidates applying for graduate roles.

Engaging young savers is a more difficult task, but I think we’re getting better at it. I really loved the “Pay Your Pension Some Attention” campaigns and hope they continue. I’m also hopeful that dashboards will spur people to pay attention to where their money is and start contributing more.

What was your dream job when you were at school?

I wanted to be a doctor up until I did my GCSEs, at which point I couldn’t bear the thought of doing so many more years of exams — and then ended up doing years of actuarial and PMI exams anyway!
