Pensions minister appointed

Guy Opperman has been re-appointed as the minister for pensions and financial inclusion, following last week’s general election.

Opperman, who was re-elected as the MP for Hexham, Tynedale and Ponteland, in Northumberland, has held this ministerial role since June 2017.

He has contributed to a  number of innovations in the pensions arena, including plans for introducing the Pensions Dashboard and the proposed launch of Collective Defined Contribution (CDC) schemes.

The Conservative Manifesto has committed to reintroducing the Pension Bill, which was shelved following the dissolution of Parliament for the election.

This bill contains measures to advance both of these initiatives, as well as introducing a more punitive regime for sponsoring companies that neglect their pension duties.

It has been widely reported that the Prime Minister Boris Johnson, will only complete a limited reshuffle of his cabinet and junior minister following his election win. However it is expected a more radical shuffle will follow in February, which may involve the break-up of several departments.
