PLSA appoints new policy board chair

The Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association (PLSA) has appointed John Chilman, the chief executive of RPMI, as its new policy board chair. 

He will take up this position for a three year period and succeeds outgoing chair, Emma Douglas, who recently became managing director of workplace savings for Aviva. Douglas will become the new chair of the PLSA.

As part of this role Chilman will also become a non-executive director on the PLSA board, when he takes up his post on October 14. 

Chilman has a wealth of industry experience having also previously served  as a director of the Railways Pension Scheme Trustee Company, and chair for the last five years. He is also an independent trustee of the Nestlé UK Pension Fund, a council member at the Pensions Policy Institute and has had a place on the PLSA’s Policy Board for the past eight months.

 As part of his new role Chilman will help ensure that the PLSA fulfils its mission to help everyone achieve a better income in retirement. The policy board’s has strategic oversight of the PLSA’s policy work programme, making sure it supports the PLSA’s purpose and strategic vision.

Douglas, outgoing policy board chair says: “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time as the PLSA’s Policy Board Chair and believe that the work we have done over the years has helped progress a number of important issues – such as the launch of the Retirement Living Standards – for PLSA members and, in turn, UK savers.

“I’m now very much looking forward to stepping into the role of PLSA chair and wish John every success in taking on this extremely important role.”

Chilman adds: “Having been involved with pensions policy for a number of years, it has always been evident to me just how important it is that we shape policy discussions to ensure the best possible outcomes for PLSA members, and savers across the UK.

The policy board meets four times a year. It is supported by four standing committees aligned to the current regulatory regimes: defined benefit, local authority, defined contribution and master trust pensions.
