Renewals and new SME business driving growth in group protection market: L&G

L&G has seen a significant increase in online renewals in its group protection business following the introduction of its digital platform Onix.

L&G says it has seen a 144 per cent increase in online renewals when compared to the previous year. It says this reflects how the platform offers ongoing efficiencies and simplicity for advisers as the in-force group risk portfolio continues to grow.

This comes amid strong growth in the group protection market. L&G said that applications via its Onix platform rose by 16 per cent in 2025, to hit a new record level.

L&G says it has seen particularly strong growth from the SME market,  with four in five new policies written in 2025 were covering fewer than 250 individuals.

It adds that its Onix platform is helping the insurer and interediatirs to expand their reach into previously untapped areas, such as small businesses.

Overall L&G says that in last year there was a 2 per cent increase in new business quote volumes submitted via Onix. It adds that life assurance new business annual premium equivalent (APE) figures were up 5 per cent with group income protection new business APE up by 8 per cent.

In addition intermediaries can now also obtain online new business quotes for Limited Liability Partnership (LLP) members and equity partners. Quotes will be accessible for businesses with as few as three individuals to cover, and will come with a three-year unit rate guarantee.

Additionally, LLP members and equity partners may be included in the same quote as their employees or quoted on a standalone basis, which can reduce lengthy administration for the customer.

This follows a move by L&G earlier last year to merge its partner policy terms with its employee policy terms, allowing for combined policies.

L&G distribution director, group protection Colin Fitzgerald says: “Onix is streamlining efficiencies throughout the entire customer journey, from initial quotation to renewing the business at the press of a button.

“We are particularly pleased to see how the intermediaries we work closely with are making the most of our Onix renewal functionality with a massive increase of 144 per cent year over year.

“L&G will continue to promote this user-friendly renewal functionality to bring long term efficiencies to more of our customers through digital processing, while continuing to enhance new business scope with Limited Liability Partnerships (LLP), and to allow for dividend income to also be considered for cover.”
