Standard Life has appointed Emma Furlonger as managing director of its workplace and retail intermediary businesses on a permanent basis.

Furlonger has held this position on an interim basis since April this year, after Gail Izat became chief operating officer for Standard Life’s wider pensions and savings business.

Furlonger has nearly 30 years’ experience in the pensions industry, working across workplace pensions, intermediary distribution, client relationships and business growth.

She joined Standard Life in 2021 as head of DC workplace distribution before becoming workplace trading director in 2025. Prior to joining Standard Life, she held senior roles at Legal & General, Aviva, Friends Life and Friends Provident.

Her appointment comes as Standard Life continues to strengthen its position in workplace pensions market where it now supports around three million members with their retirement savings.

The businesses play an important role in Standard Life’s focus on retirement savings and income, supporting members and customers, employers, trustees and advisers with long-term financial planning.

Standard Life CEO pensions and savings Angela Byrne says: “[Furlonger] has strong leadership experience and a good understanding of Standard Life’s customers, advisers and strategic priorities.”

Byrne adds that workplace pensions and its retail intermediary business remain central to the company’s future growth plans.
