Incentives wield a stronger influence on exercise levels among individuals over 50 than their younger counterparts, according to Vitality.

According to data analysing members’ exercise habits, older and more active members exhibit higher levels of physical activity, registering almost 11 per cent more active days per month (15.7) than their younger friends (14.1).

The Apple Watch is a popular reward, benefiting older members the most. On average, those over 60 using this incentive show a 15 per cent increase in activity compared to those under 30.

Data from Vitality’s Britain’s Healthiest Workplace study shows that only 4.9 per cent of employees engage with health apps on average.

In contrast, more than 50 per cent of members on business and corporate plans engage within a month, a rate ten times higher than the market average. Vitality’s effective approach to incentivising activity sets a high standard in the industry, encouraging healthier lifestyles for all.

Vitality programme managing director Nick Read says: “Making healthy decisions is not easy. At Vitality, we know first-hand that it takes a complex combination of nudges and incentives to truly bring about sustainable behaviour change.

“Making the decision to get active is beneficial for health at all ages, so it’s positive to see that our business is driving engagement among all age groups.

“However, it’s particularly great to see the over 50s making healthy lifestyle changes and reaping the benefits of the Vitality Programme, as we understand the importance of getting active at older ages to improve people’s longevity and promote healthy ageing.”
