Liz Kendall will be Labour’s new shadow work and pensions secretary, replacing the previous incumbent Jon Ashworth.
This change was announced by the Labour leader Keir Starmer this morning as part of his front bench reshuffle.
Kendall, the MP for Leicester West, was a previous contender to be leader of the party, having stood in the 2015 election — which was won by Jeremy Corbyn.
Kendall, who has been an MP since 2010, has held a number of shadow cabinet positions, including shadow minister for social care. Before becoming an MP she worked as a special adviser for both Harriet Harman and Patricia Hewitt and is widely seen as being a more centrist figure within the party.
Jon Ashworth will become Labour’s shadow paymaster general.
